The Town of Leland actively seeks grants and other funding opportunities to fund various projects, procure specialty equipment, and provide funding for training. Grant funding allows the Town to go beyond the limits of our operational budget and provide a solution for evolving community problems. N.C. Department of Commerce Rural Transformation Grant Fund will help rural communities revitalize main street and downtown districts, seed and advance initiatives that build local capacity, revitalize, and strengthen neighborhoods, foster small business recovery/sustainability, and support economic growth.
The Baldwin Drive Improvement Project includes street, sidewalk, and drainage improvements along Baldwin Drive from Lee Drive to Navassa Road. Improvements include resurfacing, installation of sidewalk, curb and gutter, and storm drain piping for the section of road, as well as grading and stormwater upgrades to improve area drainage.
The road design includes 10-foot travel lanes with curb and gutter, new stripping-including center-line stripes, and planter strip with trees. The pedestrian improvements include new 5’ sidewalks on both sides of the road, ADA compliant curb ramps at Lee Drive, and crosswalks. In effort to reduce roadway flooding concerns, there will be additional storm drain piping and additional grading to improve the stormwater system. This project addresses safety concerns for both pedestrians and motorists and will better serve the developing areas within Leland.
The Fire Prevention and Safety (FP&S) Grants are part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) and support projects that enhance the safety of the public and firefighters from fire and related hazards. The primary goal is to reduce injury and prevent death among high-risk populations. The Leland Fire/Rescue Department requested funding for a public fire safety trailer.
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program is the primary provider of federal criminal justice funding to states and units of local government. Through this opportunity, the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) will award JAG Program funds to eligible units of local government as described in this solicitation.
The Town of Leland has requested funding to aid investigators in our Criminal Investigations Division to forensically analyze seized electronic equipment. The addition of this equipment, software, and training will increase our resources and knowledge allowing us to provide victims with the highest level of service excellence in a more timely, efficient matter.
The Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act (LEMHWA) Program funds are used to improve the delivery of and access to mental health and wellness services for law enforcement through the implementation of peer support, training, family resources, suicide prevention, and other promising practices for wellness programs. The FY22 LEMHWA program will fund projects that develop knowledge, increase awareness of effective mental health and wellness strategies, increase the skills and abilities of law enforcement, and increase the number of law enforcement agencies and relevant stakeholders using peer support, training, family resources, suicide prevention, and other promising practices for wellness programs.
The Town of Leland has applied for funding for First Responders Resiliency, Inc. to travel to Town Hall for peer support training with the Leland Police Department and Leland Fire/Rescue Department.
The USDOJ Community Policing Development: Accreditation Program funds costs related to agencies obtaining law enforcement accreditation. Our goal is to become accredited through the NCLEA. The Leland Police Department will be using these funds to purchase software to ensure our agency is adopting and maintaining the highest level of standards. The accreditation process will increase the skills and abilities of our officers, prevent crime, and promote a safer community.
555 Fitness provides fitness equipment to departments across the United State through their Strength Is Our Foundation Grant. 555 Fitness and Leland Fire/Rescue share similar goals of improving the health and well-being of our Fire Department. The addition of more functional fitness equipment allows our firefighters to develop greater stamina and strength, decrease the risk of injury, improve performance, increase energy, and provide a quicker recovery from strenuous and exhaustive work.
