Safe to say Project Manager Christie Schreckengost had quite the August. 👏👏 Last month, she officially retired from the U.S. Coast Guard after 20 years of service, completing her career at the rank of Commander. Christie's retirement ceremony was held aboard the USS North Carolina on Aug. 9, surrounded by family, friends, coworkers, and shipmates. In her role as Senior Reserve Officer at Sector North Carolina, she led 150 Reserve members across the state and helped ensure they were trained, prepared, and ready to serve when called upon. And because apparently retiring after two decades of service wasn't enough for one month, Christie was also named a finalist for WILMA's Women to Watch Award in the Public Sector category! 🎉 Around Town Hall, Christie likes to joke that she's in charge of the "horizontal" things, including roads, sidewalks, stormwater, and utilities. We're pretty lucky that after 20 years of serving her country, she's still putting those leadership skills to work right here in Leland. We’re switching things up a little at Founders Park this week. 🪕🎶 Dear MariBella is bringing their bluegrass sound and family harmonies to the amphitheater Thursday, Sept. 3, for our next Live in Leland concert! This talented local band of siblings takes the stage at 6 p.m. Admission is FREE, so bring your lawn chair or picnic blanket and settle in for an evening of live music at the park. They stopped by the amphitheater to give us a little preview. Tap ▶️ and have a listen. 👀🎶

We’re not saying Battle of the Bowls changed the course of human history, but we’re also NOT not saying it. 🌶️ The fourth annual Battle of the Bowls returns Sept. 17 at Founders Park (6-8 p.m.), with Leland Fire Department, Leland Police Department, and the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office squaring off for chili bragging rights. Come sample the competition, cast your vote, and help support Manna Ministries through canned food donations and $1 voting tickets. We’ll also have live music, food trucks, yard games, face painting, and plenty more happening around the park. Be there ... for history and chili. 🧑‍🍳

There are plenty of reasons to lend a hand. We figured we’d let a few of our own tell you theirs. 💙 Their answers are a pretty good reminder of what can happen when people give a little of their time to help out around Leland. Lend a Hand Leland is coming up Saturday, Oct. 3, and there’s still time to sign up for a volunteer project that fits you! Grab a friend or two and spend the morning giving back alongside your neighbors. - Check-in begins at Founders Park at 8 a.m. - Volunteer projects begin at 9 a.m. - We’ll wrap up at noon. Registration is required (use the link below), so save your spot and lend a hand with us!

🌲 Another step forward for Loblolly Park! The Town has received the first round of concept designs for the future park and is now reviewing those plans and providing feedback as the overall design continues to be refined. Proposed amenities include an 18-hole disc golf course, multi-use trail network, and possible playground, active facilities, picnic areas, more. A comprehensive master plan is also being developed, with opportunities for residents to provide feedback along the way. Final design work is anticipated to be completed by the second quarter of 2027, with construction to follow as funding becomes available. There’s still a ways to go, but we’re excited to see what comes next for Loblolly Park! Follow the latest project updates, using the 🔗 below.

Well, Leland, it looks like this British invasion is a no-go. 🇬🇧🌧️ Due to the potential for inclement weather Thursday, this week's Live in Leland concert featuring The British Invaders has been canceled. We know many of you were looking forward to the show, and we're disappointed we won't get to spend the evening with you at Founders Park. But there's still one more Live in Leland concert on the calendar! 🎶 Join us Thursday, Sept. 3, as Dear MariBella and the Pig Kickers take the Founders Park amphitheater stage at 6 p.m. Admission is free, so make plans to join us! We'll keep calm, carry on, and see y'all next week. 💙

🌊 Swiftwater Assessments 🏊‍♂️ Moving water is powerful and unpredictable, and the firefighters on our Swiftwater Team have to be ready for it. This week, Leland Fire Department is putting those skills to the test through three days of swiftwater assessments. Our firefighters are demonstrating their swimming ability and comfort in challenging water conditions, along with rope skills that can be just as important during a rescue. With swiftwater teams often deploying in smaller groups, everyone needs to know how to rig, tie knots, and build rope systems with little direction. These assessments are required to serve on the team and help make sure our firefighters are ready when they’re needed.
