Leland Fire/Rescue Encourages Eligible Seniors to Apply for Free KnoxBox Program

Leland Fire/Rescue installing a KnoxBox

Leland Fire/Rescue is reminding eligible residents to apply for its KnoxBox program. The program provides secure key safes for older residents within the Leland Fire District, ensuring emergency access to homes when needed.

The KnoxBox rapid entry system is a secure emergency access program developed for property owners and fire departments. When a fire breaks out or there is a medical emergency, Knox products allow immediate entry into buildings and property without forced entry damage or delay. Each KnoxBox purchased for a property in the Leland Fire District is keyed to a single master key controlled by the department. Nearly all the businesses and residential complexes in the Leland Fire District have KnoxBox key safes in place for fire department access during emergencies.

The program is open to all residents aged 65 and older who live alone in the Leland fire district. The department will supply the safes and install them as donations allow. Each KnoxBox is secured to a single master key, which is controlled by the department and will only be used during emergencies. Department employees will not access the keys inside the safe for non-emergency situations.

Since Leland Fire/Rescue started the program in 2022, 11 residents have received KnoxBoxes for their homes.

Residents are encouraged to apply using this online request form at any time and will be contacted to discuss availability and arrange installation.
