Town of Leland Receives Award for Achievements in Budgeting and Financial Reporting

The Town of Leland has received its third Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for the Fiscal Year 2024-2025 Budget.

According to the GFOA, this award represents a significant achievement and underscores the commitment of Town Council and staff to upholding the highest principles of governmental budgeting. To earn this recognition, the Town had to meet nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines assess how well an entity's budget functions as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide, and a communication tool. To qualify, budget documents must be rated "proficient" in all four categories and in the 14 mandatory criteria within those categories.

The Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program (Budget Awards Program) was established in 1984. According to the GFOA, it was created to encourage and assist state and local governments to prepare budget documents of the very highest quality that reflect both the guidelines established by the National Advisory Council on State and Local Budgeting and the GFOA's best practices on budgeting, and to recognize individual governments that succeed in achieving that goal.

With more than 1,700 participants in the Budget Awards Program, award recipients have led the way in enhancing the quality of budgeting, setting an exemplary standard for other governments throughout North America. View the Fiscal Year 2024-2025 Budget Manual.
