The Town of Leland has been awarded $442,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds for the Neighborhood Revitalization Program. This funding will allow for rehabilitation for substandard housing and replacement housing assistance.
The Town will use this grant to repair or reconstruct three homes identified in the community whose owners need assistance to bring their living conditions up to safe standards.
The three structures have a range of repair needs including foundations incapable of supporting normal load, window casings severely decayed, heating systems unable to heat to 70 degrees, failed septic tank, and unsafe electrical wiring system. One of the homes has a failed septic tank and will be connected to public sewer, which runs in front of the property. Based on the severity of repairs necessary, two of the homes will be completely replaced.
“The Town hopes to strengthen and revitalize the community and invest in healthy, safe, and walkable neighborhoods by targeting federal funding into housing improvements to ensure safe, sanitary living situations for residents who need assistance,” Community Development Planner Barnes Sutton said.
This CDBG grant will enhance community development by providing safe, energy-efficient, standard living conditions for low-income residents in the Town.
