The Town of Leland has declared a State of Emergency effective Tuesday, Aug. 6 at 5 p.m. ahead of potential impacts from Tropical Storm Debby.
“This state of emergency is a precautionary measure to ensure we can effectively respond to any challenges that may arise,” Mayor Brenda Bozeman said. “We urge residents to stay alert and keep a close watch as the storm develops.”
The declaration includes a voluntary evacuation for residents who live in low-lying and flood prone areas or substandard or mobile homes.

Town of Leland staff are actively monitoring and preparing for the storm. The Town’s emergency operations center will be activated on Wednesday, Aug. 7 at 8 a.m.
All Town facilities will be closed Aug. 7 and 8. Normal operating hours are expected to resume on Aug. 9. The Leland Police Department and Leland Fire/Rescue will remain operational throughout the storm.
As of Aug. 6, the National Weather Service in Wilmington reported that Pender, New Hanover, and Brunswick Counties are under a tropical storm watch, with potentially life-threatening flooding expected across northeast South Carolina and southeast North Carolina.
Residents are encouraged to secure any loose items around their homes. The Town will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates on Tropical Storm Debby.
