Leland Launches New Interactive Budget Software

The Town of Leland has launched a new interactive budget software as part of ongoing efforts to increase transparency with the community about the Town’s finances.

The Town has partnered with OpenGov, the leading budgeting and performance company powering more effective and accountable government. The OpenGov Cloud™ is the leading cloud-based solution for budgeting and performance and communications and reporting.

The fiscal year 2023-2024 online budget manual, developed in the OpenGov format, is an interactive tool that allows residents to quickly find information about budget line items, funding sources, capital improvement project information, financial structure, policies, and processes. On the home page, users can inspect and drill into an interactive graph, providing a more comprehensive experience than traditional paper or PDF budgets.

This manual will help Town staff create future budgets by streamlining the process. While helping the budget adhere to Government Finance Officers Association standards, the book also meets a key goal of transparency.

“This budget solution enables staff to move from cumbersome spreadsheets and documents to an all-encompassing budget software that provides the ultimate transparency to our citizens,” Budget and Strategy Manager Kelli Newton said. “We’re ecstatic for our community to explore our first online budget manual, which provides easily navigable Town financial data, departmental goals, and capital project details.”

Access the Transparency Portal to understand more about the Town’s operations and performance.

In May, Town Council adopted the budget for FY23/24, which takes effect July 1 and runs through June 30, 2024. Learn more about the FY23/24 budget and view the highlights.

OpenGov’s transparency site aggregates, organizes, and visualizes various data sets. The new site gives community members more insight into how their taxpayer dollars are spent, and gives Town staff easier access to data so they can make more informed decisions that drive better outcomes.

“Our open data portal is a win-win for the Town of Leland and the community,” said OpenGov CEO Zac Bookman. “On average, governments receive 20 percent less requests for information after they launch their OpenGov open data portals. That means citizens are getting the information they need, and it saves governments time and energy that can be spent elsewhere.”

The Town of Leland joins more than 2,000 city, county, and state governments, special districts, and schools that rely on OpenGov to be more effective and accountable.
