A burn ban has been issued by the Town of Leland, Brunswick County, and the N.C. Forest Service effective Friday, March 21 at 8 a.m. until further notice.
The ban prohibits all burning within 100 feet of an occupied structure within Town limits. Due to Brunswick County’s burn ban, the same restrictions apply to unincorporated areas of the county within the Leland Fire District.
This precaution is necessary as Leland and surrounding areas are currently experiencing moderate drought conditions, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor for North Carolina. The N.C. Forest Service has also classified the fire danger index for the region as “very high,” indicating an increased risk of wildfires.
The burn ban will remain in effect until conditions improve. The Town of Leland will announce any updates, including when the burn ban is lifted, through its website and social media channels.
