In 2023, the Town participated in the Partners for Green Growth grant program, which is administered by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. Council adopted the Green Network Master Plan Framework Guide in summer 2024. This policy document emphasizes conservation, promotes trail connectivity, and advocates for eco-friendly, sustainable development practices. The goals and objectives of this plan were influenced by Leland 2045 to ensure alignment between the plans.
Goals of the Green Network Master Plan Framework Guide:
- Protect and enhance Leland’s natural environment to improve flood safety, provide recreational access, boost tourism, and safeguard natural resources.
- Create strategies for future conservation/protection efforts that preserve critical natural environments.
- Promote green building and development techniques as a part of Leland’s image, character, and brand.
- Create a linked open space network that supports environmental connectivity, trails, and blueways.
- Maximize public access to public trust waters.
- Link resiliency and open space planning with growth management to ensure development occurs in environmentally and economically suitable areas.
- Planning frameworks that create a complete community.
- Connectivity through trails and greenways.
