Leland to Rename Park in Honor of Town Founders

The Town of Leland’s Municipal Park will soon go by a new name.

During its regular monthly meeting on Thursday, Oct. 17, Leland Town Council agreed to rename the park Founders Park, a move first suggested by Mayor Brenda Bozeman in September as a way to permanently honor the small but dedicated group of people instrumental in the Town’s incorporation in 1989.

“After we celebrated our 30th Anniversary with Founders’ Day on September 14, I felt more moved than ever by the work of those who laid the foundation for Leland,” Bozeman recalled. “Because this year’s Founders’ Day was a milestone celebration, we had paid special tribute to our founders and their loved ones with a luncheon and memorial plaque in Municipal Park. I just wanted to keep that momentum going.”

With unanimous approval by Town Council, the name change will soon become official – and noticeable – to Leland residents with a new sign at the former Municipal Park, located at 113 Town Hall Drive across from Leland Town Hall. A sign bearing the name, Founders Park, is expected to be in place by early November.

The new Founders Park is the site of the annual Founders’ Day celebration, as well as the upcoming Leland in Lights holiday spectacular on Dec. 7 and a host of other ongoing events, like Leland’s free Movie in the Park and concert series. Those events will continue in the same location.

“I am so thrilled to have one of our beautiful parks – especially one that brings our diverse community together – named for those responsible for what Leland is today,” Bozeman said. “I know this would make them all so proud.”
