EDUCATION & OUTREACH
Stormwater runoff is a major issue for The Town of Leland. Our area is in high demand because of it's water related amenities. While having these resources makes the area very attractive for development, this development ultimately has negative impacts on the quality of our water resources. As development increases in the area, so does the amount of impervious surface. This causes increased runoff, which carries pollutants and sediment into our waterways and can increase the likelihood of flooding in certain areas. Many area waterways suffer from high levels of bacteria and nutrients, frequent algae blooms and low dissolved oxygen levels. Most of these water quality problems can be traced back to activities that occur on land.
The most common sources of pollutants are
IT IS EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILITY TO KEEP OUR WATERWAYS CLEAN.
We all contribute to the pollution of our creeks and lakes by allowing pollutants to enter our storm drains. Storm drains are pipe systems that prevent flooding of our streets by channeling stormwater directly to our creeks and lakes. Anything that flows into the storm drains ends up in our creeks untreated. This interconnected system consists of storm drains, drainage ditches, underground pipes, ponds, wetlands and culverts. On the other hand, the sanitary sewer system, or wastewater system, takes all household wastewater (from toilets, showers, sinks, water fountains, etc) and routes it through your plumbing to wastewater treatment plants. Once there, this wastewater is treated and cleaned before being discharged into surface waters.
