Letter from the Chief of Police

I am pleased to become part of the Leland community and join the team at the Leland Police Department. During my twenty two year career with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department I was in a unique position to see tremendous growth in that city. While we all envision growth in Leland I want to see Leland grow smart, with neighborhoods that have quality of life as a focus. Part of the reason I sought the Chiefs' job in Leland is because I saw a town with leadership both politically and internally with the elected officials, town managers office and planning staff  that had a clear vision for what kind of Leland we all want five or ten years from now.

What I hope to bring to the community is a strong foundation of Community Problem Oriented Policing (C-POP) when implemented across all divisions of the Leland Police Department this will allow officers to engage citizens in problem solving partnerships to prevent crime. Police Departments are at their best when they have strong collaborations with communities and work together to solve problems. In order for this to work we need open lines of communication and a strong sense of trust in one and other. That trust is clearly evident when I speak with residents in neighborhoods from Village Road in historic Leland or new neighborhood off the Highway 17 or 133. We have recently revised our Mission Statement and I believe this Mission Statement embodies what you should expect from the Leland Police Department. Please feel free to stop in and say hello and I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with your neighborhood association in your community.

Timothy J. Jayne

Chief of Police
